Proper Well Abandonment

A well is considered abandoned if it’s in such disrepair that it can’t be used safely or effectively. Proper abandonment is crucial because an unused or damaged well can act as a direct conduit for pollutants to enter underground water sources. Well abandonment is the process of safely and permanently closing a well that is no longer in use or has become a potential hazard.

Typically, your local health department will require abandonment based on the well’s condition or location, such as proximity to a septic system or property setbacks. We remove any pumps, piping, or obstructions from the well. We then fill the well with an impermeable material—typically bentonite clay, neat cement, or concrete—to block any pathways for water or contaminants. A formal record of the abandonment is submitted to the appropriate agency, such as the Division of Water Quality in North Carolina.
